The Grenada National Museum (GNM) located at the corner of Young and Monckton Streets, St. George’s opened its doors to the public on 17 April 1976. Under the instigation of then Prime Minister Sir Eric M. Gairy, it was founded by a group of expatriates and citizens who came together to promote the awareness of history, culture and heritage by displaying elements of Grenadian history and culture.

The River Antoine Estate is home to the oldest rum distillery in Grenada, where the originaly owners began producing rum in 1785. Today’s owners continue the tradition, serving as a huge part of the Grenadine culture and history and offering a glimpse into the production of one of the country’s most famous exports.
Visitors can learn about and witness the process of production, from the initial picking of the sugarcane plant, the fermentation and distilling processes to sampling and tasting the famous finished product, which is completely organic. The site’s water wheel is actually the oldest in the whole of the Caribbean and one of the only working plantation water wheels in the world.

The Carriacou Museum was founded in 1976 and has occupied three locations in Hillsborough before settling into its present home on Paterson Street in 1989. In fact, the present building is of historical interest in its own right being an old cotton ginnery (the second oldest in the world) when it ceased operating in 1979.
The Carriacou Historical Society seeks to preserve our heritage by hosting digs by archaeological groups, organizing seminars and craft exhibitions, and maintaining a good reference library of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique history including some general West Indian and African history.
