OAS/GNT Sustainable Heritage Endorsement ProgrammePHOTOVOICE PROMPT #4: This is not the Grenada I once Knew
What do you see here? (Addressed to the whole group)
Kumar’s shop selling Digicel top-up.
Is that Kumar’s building? Does he rent it?
It’s a government building.
It’s the old cocoa factory.
Why did you take this photo? (Addressed to the photographer)
Many people never realized what this building was. Some people can’t remember that this was a board building that has been built over.
What is really happening here? (Addressed to the whole group—alternatively what does the photograph represent?)
Development of the country.
We’re losing what we had. Cocoa used to be sold when we were the Isle of Spice. We don’t have the same amounts.
GCNA can mash down a whole building because we devalue it [farming] now. Now you have to hire transport to sell instead of going somewhere nearby.
Nutmeg shells used to be bought as well.
Kumar is taking over and he’s not Grenadian.
