OAS/GNT Sustainable Heritage Endorsement ProgrammePHOTOVOICE PROMPT #2: The Only Things Tourists See
What do you see here? (Addressed to the whole group)
nice dollies, idols, perception of Caribbean women, clothes, jewelry looks african but we don’t always really keep that look here. People sell this and others buy it and then go back to where the live and then people this this is what we look like. Souvenirs are meant to remind us of a place.
Why did you take this photo? (Addressed to the photographer)
It’s a nice piece of craft. The tone of the painting is very real. Not sure if it was made here though.
What is really happening here? (Addressed to the whole group—alternatively what does the photograph represent?)
Doubt it was made here, maybe a 50/50 chance
Overall guess is that 25% of tourist items made here. All those jerseys , mugs etc. are not made here.
Even our independence day items are imported
Some soaps, candles and dolls are made here though
Represents tourism industry and perception of Caribbean people
It also represents the skills of the person who made it
